The MegaPipe® – Conveyor as a steep-angle conveyor for
in-pit crushing and conveying systems of opencast, quarries
and underground mines (IPCC)

Up to the mid-term life of a hard rock open pit mine haul-truck fleets offer significant advantages of relatively low initial capital costs, redundancy and flexibility. But when a pit has reached a certain depth, the increasing costs of truck haulage will inevitably lead mine operators to start searching for alternatives. The article describes the results of experimental investigations of the conveying characteristics of a MegaPipe® steep inclined conveying system with unprofiled belt cover plates. The MegaPipe® conveyor system was developed jointly by the consortium thyssenkrupp, ContiTech and Siemens and enables steep conveying of primary crushed ore or rock overburden at an angle of inclination of up to approx. 34 degrees. The conveyor concept in connection with an in-pit crusher station makes an important contribution to reducing heavy-duty truck haulage in a mine, CO2 emissions and, as a result, investment and operating costs in surface mining.
