Ferrous slags – how to evaluate the ecological impact

The ecological footprint of building materials is becoming more and more important in public discussions. Therefore tools like Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) were introduced during recent years. To use these tools seriously it is very important not to “compare apples and oranges”. From this it follows that an appropriate and fair ecological evaluation also of industrial by-products like ferrous slags must be done. The most important of those slags with respect to EPDs is granulated blast furnace slag, which is established as a cement constituent or concrete addition. This paper also describes some different allocation models being discussed currently as the consequences of the ecological image of ferrous slags.
