Production of high quality CEM III
at Spenner Zement´s Rheingold plant

H. Sievers, Spenner Zement GmbH & Co. KG, Erwitte,
D. Strohmeyer, Loesche GmbH, Duesseldorf, Germany

The Western German and Benelux cement markets show a strong demand for high quality CEM III cement. Hence, the German cement producer Spenner Zement decided to strengthen its position by investing in a 70 t/h GBFS grinding plant in Duisburg/Germany next to the steel plant Huettenwerke Krupp Mannesmann (HKM). After evaluating potential suppliers as well as grinding systems, Spenner Zement signed a contract with the vertical roller mill company Loesche GmbH for the supply of the grinding plant on a turnkey basis. Highest environmental standards such as noise and emission limits had to be considered concerning the design of the plant which today is one of the most modern installations worldwide. The erection and cold commissioning period was completed in February 2014 and two weeks later the plant reached a capacity in excess of 75 t/h at a lower than guaranteed specific energy consumption. With its compact design the plant fits into the limited space and exhibits some unique features such as the underground feeding hopper, the spring loaded foundation as well as a state-of-the-art control system. The heart of the grinding plant, the Loesche LM 46.2+2, reduces the GBFS from ~5 mm to a d`of 10 to 20 μm. Targeting ever higher quality targets for the CEM III cements, a blend of the CEM I produced at Spenners Erwitte plant and the locally ground GBFS, a sequence of optimizations was carried out leading to a fineness of the slag meal of up to 5800 cm²/g acc. to Blaine. The Rheingold grinding and cement blending unit is an example of a quick and successful project resulting from a fruitful cooperation of the cement manufacturer Spenner Zement and the equipment supplier Loesche GmbH.
