Population-balance-based model

High-pressure grinding in relation to comminution in a particle bed, with its low power requirement, is one of the principal reasons for the successful use of such grinding systems like the vertical roller mill (VRM) and the high-pressure grinding roll (HPGR) in the international cement industry of today. A precise and economical design of grinding and classifying circuits is necessary in order to provide efficient cement plants in line with the market. A most effective option will be a combination of grindability tests and simulations for the design of comminution processes. Intensive tests were therefore performed to gain familiarity with the breakage behaviour of clinker. Based on the results, new functions for selection and breakage were derived. With these approaches, it is now possible to predict the product particle size distribution according to the original particle size and the grinding pressure. This comminution model will be combined with models for a static and a dynamic air flow separation, in order to be able to simulate a complete comminution circuit. The simulation will be validated for comminution processes including the most common mill types like the vertical roller mill and the high pressure grinding roll on a pilot scale, which are available at the research centre of thyssenkrupp Industrial Solution AG in Ennigerloh, Germany.
