Repairing a corroded baghouse filter at the Durkee cement plant by coating the surface
B. Sherin, Ash Grove Cement, Durkee, Oregon; L. Mazeika, 3L&T Inc., Mountain View, California; B. Cardwell, Applications Engineer, Penta Industrial, St. Louis, Missouri, USA
Carbon steel corrodes severely when exposed to the hot acid gases inside baghouse filters and related equipment. The Ash Grove Cement plant in Durkee, Oregon, USA experienced this type of corrosion and tried different coatings to no avail. Finally after a successful field test with FlueGard-225, a new polymeric alloy material, the plant coated the four corner compartments of their kiln baghouse with excellent results. A year later the plant decided to coat the other ten compartments without shutting down the production of cement. This was done by isolating few compartments at a time to cool them down, remove the filter bags, apply the coating and reinstall the bags to get each compartment back in service. With the proper safety procedures, the job was completed ahead of schedule, the corrosion is now under control and the plant kept producing cement at full capacity.
