Use of secondary fuels in the Rohrdorf cement works
Dipl. Ing. H. Rodlmayr, Südbayerisches Portland-Zementwerk, Rohrdorf, Germany
The cement production process is intensive in raw ma-terials and energy. For a long time the cement industry has therefore tried to use secondary materials to replace not only the requisite raw materials but also the fuels. This conserves natural resources, makes practical use of materials from other production processes in line with the Recycling and Wastes Act and improves the cost-effectiveness of the manufacturing process. The use of secondary fuels in cement works in Germany is controlled not only by the regulations in TA Luft (German Clean Air Regulations) but also by the provisions of the 17th BimSchV (17th Directive to the Federal Immission Control Ordinance). In accordance with this directive the emission limits are lowered as a function of the proportion of secondary fuels in the thermal rating. The use of secondary fuels must not have a detrimental effect on the emission situation, the manufacturing process or the properties of the end product, namely cement. The secondary materials therefore have to fulfil precisely defined quality criteria with respect to their physical properties and chemical composition. Comprehensive and thorough quality control of the secondary materials is therefore essential for successful use. This article reports on the use of secondary raw materials and secondary fuels in the Portland cement works in Rohrdorf, southern Bavaria. Particular attention is paid to the effects on the refractory lining of the rotary kiln plant.
