Controlling SO2 emission
S. W. Miller, Process Design & Laboratory, F.L.Smidth, Inc., Bethlehem, PA, USA; Dr. J. P. Hansen, Research & Development Engineer, F.L.Smidth A/S, Copenhagen, Denmark
In recent years environmental concerns have been playing a larger role in the operation of existing cement plants and with the planning of new capacity. Controlling SO2 emissions have been of particular concern to cement plants in Europe and North America. In addition, new projects around the world that receive funding from the World Bank also need to conform to specific SO2 emission limits. SO2 emissions often originate from the raw materials; therefore, not all cement plants have the same potential SO2 emission. In certain cases some type of control method must be used to limit SO2 emissions and achieve compliance. This paper will discuss laboratory investigations of how SO2 is formed and present different methods for reducing SO2 emissions, including their relative costs and their impact on the process operation.
