Modernization of two cement mills
in the Odessa cement works in the Ukraine

Ing. E. Pichlmaier, Christian Pfeiffer Maschinenfabrik GmbH,
Beckum, Germany

Christian Pfeiffer Maschinenfabrik GmbH converted two 2.2 m diameter x 13.0 m open-circuit cement mills in the Odessa cement works in the Ukraine to closed-circuit operation using one QDK 22-N high performance separator only. The cement grinding plant, consisting of two twin-chamber tube mills fed in parallel, produces three different types of cement, including a blastfurnace cement containing 50 wt.% blastfurnace slag that is ground to a fineness of 3700 cm2/g Blaine. The mill internals were also brought up to date as part of the modernization work. The first chambers were each fitted with lifting linings but the fine grinding chambers were provided with classifying linings. Each of the intermediate diaphragms used was equipped with a material flow control system so that the level of mill feed in grinding chamber 1 could be optimized. The grinding media charge consist of highly wear-resistant cast grinding balls and includes ball diameters from 18 to 90 mm. The modernization work also included the installation of a mill control system that, among other things, measures the quantity of rejects collected by the separator and feeds it in equal proportions to the two cement mills operating in parallel. From the process engineering point of view the parallel operation of two cement mills in a closed-circuit arrangement with only one separator is a very unusual concept, but in spite of this it has proved successful in practice. The conversion of the two cement mills to closed-circuit operation not only raised the output but also consistently improved the quality of all the types of cement produced. Improvements were also achieved in the electrical power consumption.
